Frequently Asked Questions about Norwich JKD and Kali

We’re excited to share with you some frequently asked questions about our martial arts club. Whether you’re new to martial arts or an experienced practitioner, this guide will help you understand what we offer and how you can get started.

What is JKD?

JKD stands for Jeet Kune Do, a martial art developed by Bruce Lee. It emphasises simplicity, directness, and personal expression. Unlike traditional martial arts, JKD is not bound by strict forms and techniques. Instead, it encourages practitioners to adapt and flow, making it a highly effective and practical fighting system.

What is Kali?

Kali is a Filipino martial art that focuses on weapon-based fighting, primarily with sticks and knives. It also includes empty-hand techniques, making it a versatile and comprehensive self-defense system. Kali is known for its fluid and dynamic movements, which are not only effective but also visually impressive.

Who can join your classes?

Our classes are open to all adults, genders and fitness levels. We welcome beginners as well as seasoned martial artists. Our instructors are skilled at tailoring lessons to fit individual needs and abilities, ensuring a supportive and inclusive training environment. We do not currently offer a juniors class.

What should I expect in my first class?

In your first class, you’ll be introduced to the basic principles and techniques of JKD and Kali. Our instructors will guide you through warm-ups, fundamental drills, and simple sparring exercises. You don’t need any prior experience or special equipment to start—just wear comfortable workout clothes and be ready to learn!

Do I need to be in shape before starting?

No, you don’t need to be in top physical condition to begin training with us. Our classes are designed to improve your fitness gradually as you progress. We focus on building strength, flexibility, and endurance over time, so you’ll find yourself getting fitter and more confident with each session.

What equipment do I need?

Initially, you don’t need any equipment to start training. As you advance, we recommend investing in a pair of training sticks for Kali and protective gear such as MMA gloves, focus pads, thai pads and mouth guards for sparring. Our instructors will provide guidance on the best equipment to purchase as you progress.

How often should I train?

Consistency is key in martial arts. We recommend training twice a week to see significant progress. However, you can adjust your training frequency based on your own schedule.
